solidworks moving sub-assemblies

I created an assembly where one item I imported from a distributor can move about 3 axis, a toggle clamp, and when I insert it into another assembly it is locked and wont move. Is there something I can do to get the movement in both assemblies?  I mean, other than inserting the sub-assembly in pieces and mating it to move as I assemble it in the new larger assembly.
